The circular economy is no longer a niche concept – it’s now recognised across the political spectrum as a cornerstone of Europe’s competitiveness and decarbonisation efforts. It sits high on the agendas of the European Council, Member States, businesses and civil society. Yet, despite significant regulatory progress over the past five years, a full-scale transition to a circular economy remains elusive.
Green Week 2025 will take a deep dive into the circular economy from multiple angles - International, economic, and practical implementation. This opening session sets the stage, positioning DG Environment within the EU’s broader strategic vision. It will outline how, in an increasingly complex and uncertain global landscape facing multiple security challenges, the Commission plans to champion policies that drive competitiveness, resilience and economic security, while safeguarding our natural capital.
Expect a forward-looking discussion on how circularity can strengthen the EU’s strategic autonomy and create a more sustainable, innovative, and competitive economy for the future.
