Description
As Europe advances towards a sustainable and competitive economy, fostering lead markets for low-carbon, circular products is essential. Cement, a strategic and indispensable material, plays a central role in this transition. With its recyclability, CO₂ absorption potential, and integration of secondary materials, cement and concrete contribute significantly to the circular economy. However, the full potential of these materials can only be realised through a strong policy and market framework that stimulates demand, encourages innovation, and ensures the sector’s global competitiveness.
This webinar will bring together policymakers, industry leaders, think tanks, and other key stakeholders to explore how Europe can create lead markets for low-carbon cement. Discussions will focus on the regulatory and market drivers necessary to accelerate the uptake of sustainable construction materials, ensuring Europe’s industrial transformation remains both climate-resilient and economically viable.
Objectives:
- Examine how the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) and the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) can enable lead markets for low-carbon and circular products.
- Explore existing lead market practices in EU Member States and identify what is needed in the short and medium term.
- Assess how the revision of Green Public Procurement (GPP) criteria can further stimulate demand and incentivise sustainable materials.
- Showcase best practices and case studies demonstrating successful lead market initiatives in the sector.
Target audience: this event is designed for industry representatives, policymakers, NGOs, think tanks, media, and the general public, fostering a broad and informed discussion on the role of circularity in Europe’s industrial competitiveness.
Format:
- Opening (5 min)
- Panel discussion featuring a representative from the European Commission, the cement industry, a think tank, academia, and an NGO (40 min) (tbc)
- Case studies showing good practices (15 min) (optional, tbc
- Q&A (10 min)
- Wrap-up (5 min)
