Description
Is ecology simply a passing trend, or a vital response to urgent environmental challenges? The Oxford debate in Żory invites young people, educators and engaged citizens to explore the role of the circular economy in shaping a sustainable future and our everyday lives.
What is an Oxford debate?
This structured, dynamic debate format features two opposing teams: one arguing for a given thesis (the proposition), the other against (the opposition). A moderator guides the discussion, while the audience observes and ultimately decides which side made the stronger case. The format promotes evidence-based arguments, sharpens rhetorical skills, and deepens understanding of sustainability topics.
Key discussion areas:
- Ecology: a trend or necessity?: is the rise in environmental awareness just a social trend, or a real response to global environmental threats? What are the implications of inaction?
- The circular economy in practice: can a circular economy really be achieved at scale? What are the benefits and limitations of recycling, resource reuse, and waste reduction?
- Environmental laws and regulations - do policies like anti-smog laws and bans on single-use plastics drive meaningful change, or do they impose unnecessary restrictions?
- Consumers vs. corporations: can individual consumer choices truly make a difference, or should responsibility lie primarily with industries and policy-makers?
Why take part?
- Develop persuasive argumentation and public speaking skills
- Strengthen critical thinking through constructive dialogue
- Deepen your understanding of the circular economy and sustainability
- Contribute to a timely, real-world debate on environmental responsibility
This is more than just a competition of ideas. It is a forum for informed, respectful exchange that challenges assumptions and inspires action.
The Oxford Debate in Żory is part of the LIFE project ‘Silesia. Blue Sky Restored’.
