These invisible threats jeopardize not just aquatic ecosystems but human health as well. IMPTOX is spearheading efforts to confront this challenge through interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation in detection and analysis. IMPTOX commits to advancing innovation in the research of MNPs and their impact on human health, supporting the ambitious objectives set forth by the European Commission's 2023 initiatives, including the REACH restriction and EU's Zero Pollution Action Plan. Particularly the aim to enhance water quality through reductions in waste, plastic litter at sea by 50%, and microplastics released into the environment by 30%.
The “IMPTOX international conference: Navigating the Invisible Currents – Micro and Nanoplastics' Water Odyssey” is a 1hour and 30 minutes online event planned as a platform for engagement on this critical issue.
The event will set the stage with an introductory welcome and keynote speeches from our esteemed researchers. These experts are at the forefront of evaluating the exposure to MNPs through water, food, and air, creating a cross-disciplinary platform to design innovative analytical approaches to characterize and measure MNPs in the environment and understand their impact on health.
Notably, their research extends to examining the presence and effects of MNPs in seafood, as well as in sea and freshwater spray aerosols, providing critical insights into the widespread nature of this pollution and its implications for human health and the environment. Following these keynote addresses, a series of roundtables will delve into the multifaceted nature of MNPs water pollution.
The event will conclude with a closing plenary that summarizes key insights and outcomes from these discussions. This final session will also outline next steps and explain how attendees can actively contribute to combating micro and nanoplastic pollution.
