This educational event, organised by EU Climate Ambassador Makios Nasos, focuses on the urgent environmental challenges our planet is facing today, including climate change, resource depletion, biodiversity loss, and the growing problem of waste generation. It aims to raise awareness and promote a shift in mindset from unsustainable consumption patterns towards more responsible and regenerative practices.
The event introduces to the students of the 1st Primary School of Kalamata the concept of the planetary crisis and explains how the dominant linear economy model (take-make-dispose) contributes significantly to environmental degradation. Through a clear and engaging presentation, participants will understand why this model is no longer viable and how it leads to the inefficient use of natural resources and increased pollution.
The central part of the session is dedicated to circular economy, presented as a key solution for a sustainable future. Students will explore its core principles, such as reducing waste, reusing materials, repairing products, recycling resources and restoring natural systems. The presentation will highlight how circular thinking can transform production and consumption patterns while supporting environmental protection and economic resilience.
In addition, the event will showcase practical examples of circular economy business models and innovative products designed according to circular principles. These real-life examples will demonstrate that sustainable solutions are already being implemented and can be applied in everyday life.
The event is designed for students, educators, young people and citizens interested in sustainability and climate action, with no prior knowledge required.
By the end of the session, participants will gain a better understanding of how 'nothing is waste' and how they can actively contribute to a more sustainable and regenerative future.
