Tackling PFAS pollution: science, cooperation and environmental solutions

  • Public debates

PFAS and other emerging contaminants represent a growing environmental challenge, affecting ecosystems, water resources and public health across Europe and beyond. Addressing these persistent chemicals requires scientific innovation, practical solutions and strong cooperation between research institutions, public authorities and operational actors.

This EU Green Week partner event explores environmental solutions to PFAS pollution, focusing on prevention, monitoring and mitigation strategies to protect natural resources and ecosystems. The event highlights how scientific research, technological innovation and operational expertise can contribute to reducing contamination risks and strengthening environmental resilience.

Recent research commissioned by the European Commission shows that the societal costs of PFAS pollution could reach around €440 billion in Europe by 2050 if no further action is taken, highlighting the urgent need for preventive and cooperative approaches.

To address this challenge, the event includes a roundtable discussion on the environmental, economic and societal costs of PFAS pollution, bringing together researchers, policymakers and practitioners to discuss policy responses, regulatory developments and strategies to reduce pollution at its source.

The event brings together a diverse audience, including researchers, environmental experts, policymakers, civil protection organisations, industry representatives, students and interested citizens. It provides a platform for dialogue between science, policy and practice.

The programme includes expert presentations on PFAS pollution, environmental protection and innovation in monitoring and remediation approaches. Participants also have the opportunity to take part in a guided visit and operational demonstration related to firefighting foams, providing practical insights into their environmental implications and ongoing efforts to develop safer and more sustainable solutions.

By fostering knowledge exchange and transnational cooperation, the event aims to promote collaborative approaches to tackling PFAS pollution and protecting ecosystems for a more sustainable and resilient future.
