Where kids and nature thrive

  • Conferences and summits

How can schoolyards become vibrant spaces where children and nature flourish together? This session, organised by IUCN Europe within the framework of the Biodiverse Cities project, explores how European cities are transforming school grounds into biodiverse, climate-resilient and child-friendly environments.

This session is designed for urban planners, local policymakers, landscape architects and professionals working on urban and green infrastructure; educators, school staff and those involved in education policy; as well as community organisers and practitioners interested in citizen engagement and participatory planning. It will also appeal to anyone curious about innovative, people-centred approaches to urban nature and climate resilience.

Featuring inspiring case studies from several European cities, the session takes participants behind the scenes of schoolyard transformation - from early ideas and motivations to hands-on implementation. It showcases how municipalities, educators and communities are working together across sectors, and how children themselves are actively engaged in co-designing and maintaining greener spaces that support their wellbeing.

Speakers will share practical experiences from different cultural contexts, innovative co-design approaches with pupils, and reflections on challenges and lessons learned along the way. By putting children at the centre - an often overlooked group in urban planning - these initiatives strengthen children’s connection with nature and open new pathways for creating healthier, more resilient cities.

The session concludes with a panel discussion, offering space for exchange, questions and inspiration.
