João Madeira is a Portuguese agronomist with a Master in Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology, from Instituto Superior de Agronomia (Universidade de Lisboa).
He is renowned for his work in organic agriculture and nature protection. His expertise involves cattle breeding, genetic resources, organic and close to nature agriculture. He is a member of the Strategic Council of the Guadiana Valley Natural Park, and of the Civil Dialogue Group "Organic Agriculture" of the European Commission.
Since 1995, he worked in agriculture for various public and private organisations. Since 2007 he has been the managing partner of Sociedade Agrícola Vargas Madeira, Lda, an agricultural company dedicated to sheep and cattle production in the municipality of Mértola.
Since January 2020, he has been chairman of the board of directors of Cooperativa Agrícola do Guadiana, a farmer's cooperative, also in the municipality of Mértola.
