Marianna Bolshakova is Environmental Law and Governance Coordinator at the Europe Office of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). She joined UNEP in early 2020 from the secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change where she served as Legal Officer, overseeing the work on the compliance regime and supporting intergovernmental negotiations, including the drafting of the Paris Agreement and its implementing framework.
Before this, Marianna worked for over seven years at the UN Economic Commission for Europe on issues that included treaty law, governance, compliance mechanisms and sustainable development initiatives.
Prior to joining the UN in 2003, she managed multi-country environmental policy and governance projects for the Regional Environmental Centre for Central and Eastern Europe. Marianna started her legal career at the first public interest environmental advocacy in Ukraine in 1995 promoting the development and implementation of environmental law and working with courts, prosecutor offices, government agencies and civil society to build capacities in this field.
She holds LLM degrees in Civil Law and in Comparative Constitutional Law.
