Peter STROHSCHNEIDER

As Special Adviser Peter Strohschneider chairs the Strategic Dialogue on the Future of EU-Agriculture, launched by President Ursula von der Leyen in January 2024.

Peter Strohschneider is Professor emeritus for German Medieval Studies at the University of Munich. He studied German Philology, Law, History, Sociology and Political Sciences in Munich, obtained his Doctorate in 1984 and his Habilitation in 1991. From 1992 to 2002 he was Chair of German Medieval and Early Modern Studies at Dresden University of Technology before he took over the same position at University of Munich.

From 2006 to 2011 he served as Chairman of the Wissenschaftsrat (German Council of Sciences and Humanities) and from 2013 to 2019 as President of the German Research Foundation.  From 2020 to 2024 he chaired the Commission on the Future of Agriculture appointed by the German federal government.

Peter Strohschneider has been or is fellow at Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes (Paris), the universities of Freiburg and Frankfurt, the Wissenschaftskolleg in Berlin, and the International Science Council. He was awarded the German Federal Cross of Merit (first class) and is a member of numerous national and international organisations, including Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities, Leopoldina – German National Academy of Sciences and Academia Europaea.

He has worked in the fields of science administration and policy and published on the science system. His literary research focuses on cultural medieval studies. His most recent book is “Truths and Majorities. Critique of Authoritarian Scientism” (forthcoming 2024).
