Threads of sustainable change: a children’s workshop on textiles, nature and circular living

  • Training and workshops

The workshop ‘Threads of sustainable change’ is a free interactive educational event for children aged 8 and above, organised by the National Electricity Company (NEK) in partnership with TexCycle.bg. Taking place on 3 June 2026 from 10:00 to 12:30, the event shows, in a practical and age-appropriate way, how everyday choices about clothing, textiles and consumption can help protect natural resources, reduce waste and support a more sustainable future.

The event is based on the idea that investing in nature is not only about large-scale projects, but also about how people use their time, knowledge and skills to care for resources responsibly and make better everyday choices. It highlights how good habits formed from a young age can benefit both the environment and society.

The programme opens with a short introductory lecture and interactive discussion explaining what it means to ‘invest in nature’. Through practical examples, children explore the links between water, raw materials, energy use, waste prevention and responsible consumption, and why these issues matter in daily life. The event then focuses on textiles as a relatable example of how households can reduce pressure on natural resources. Children learn how much water, energy and raw materials are needed to produce clothing; how textile waste, pollution and fast fashion affect the environment; how separate textile collection, donation, reuse and recycling can help protect nature; and how simple daily habits can support circular economy principles from an early age.

Participants test their knowledge through an interactive quiz with small symbolic prizes made from reused or upcycled textile materials. In the creative workshop, they transform old T-shirts and fabric scraps into useful new items such as bags and small accessories, combining environmental learning with practical skills and creativity.

The event aims to raise awareness among children about the link between responsible consumption, resource efficiency and the protection of nature. Participation is free of charge, subject to prior registration and venue capacity. The event is organised in an environmentally responsible manner, using reusable and sustainable materials where possible.
