Description
ANCIENT ALBUNEA and the LAKE of TURNO (or of GIUTURNA) – 16.06.2024 On Sunday 16 JUNE will take place the last guided tour of an area rich in myths and history, narrated in the Virgil's Aeneid The tour will start at 9.30 a.m. at the lake of Turno (or Giuturna) in Pavona of Castel Gandolfo.
According to the myth, the goddess Giuturna, sister of King Turno, lived in this area and from her named a spring and the homonymous lake. We’ll continue to visit the Grotta del Fauno. It is a cavern flooded by waters flowing from a sulphurous spring inside. It is a magical place chosen by the Latin priests for their rituals.
Virgil himself writes in the Aeneid that the Latin king went to the cave of his father Faunus, considered the ancestor of the Latins, to consult his oracle, and it was here that he learned that his daughter Lavinia would marry a foreign hero (Aeneas).
Then we’ll visit the Solfatara lakes: the white lake with its numerous water springs that make it sizzle with a highly suggestive visual effect, and the Red Lake, whose colours are due to the presence of the algae that gives this particular colour to the mirror of water.
