Digital media literacy for sustainable rural communities

  • Conferences and summits

In an increasingly digital Europe, rural entrepreneurs, artists and cultural creators often face structural barriers to accessing and benefiting from digital communication tools. Limited media literacy, unequal access to digital skills and exposure to misinformation can weaken civic participation and reduce the visibility of local cultural initiatives. These challenges directly affect social sustainability and the resilience of rural communities — and, by extension, their capacity to act as stewards of the natural environments they inhabit.

The MIA project addresses this gap by equipping creative professionals in rural areas with essential skills in digital democracy, ethical content creation, misinformation detection and responsible social media engagement. Over twelve months, regional pilot programmes were implemented in Portugal, Bulgaria and Poland, supporting participants in developing their own media projects promoting local cultural initiatives.

This final hybrid event will:

officially launch the MIA Media Literacy Guidebook and policy recommendations;
present results and lessons learned from the regional pilot programmes;
showcase participant media projects developed during the Media Residence; and
foster cross-sector dialogue between cultural actors, policymakers, media professionals and civil society.

The event combines panel discussions, interactive exchanges, expert roundtables and project presentations. Participants from the three pilot countries share their experiences, demonstrating how media literacy strengthens sustainable community engagement, ethical communication and digital inclusion.

The Media Literacy Guidebook provides a replicable training model for regional and local authorities, NGOs and cultural organisations seeking to promote responsible digital participation. The accompanying policy recommendations aim to support European regions in reducing inequalities in access to media production and digital civic engagement.

The event targets policymakers, cultural organisations, media literacy experts, NGOs, rural development stakeholders and representatives of European institutions. It offers a platform for knowledge-sharing, networking and strategic collaboration at the intersection of digital democracy, sustainability and cultural resilience.

Rural communities are on the front line of the nature crisis — and they are also among its most important defenders. When rural creators and entrepreneurs are empowered to communicate effectively, they become more visible advocates for the landscapes, ecosystems and nature-based livelihoods that define their regions. Investing in the digital capabilities of rural communities is, in this sense, also an investment in nature: it amplifies the voices of those who live closest to it, strengthens local governance over natural resources and builds the social fabric needed for community-led conservation and green transition efforts to take root.

By linking media literacy with inclusive participation and community empowerment, MIA contributes to a greener, more resilient and socially sustainable Europe — one in which rural communities have the tools and the voice to invest in nature on their own terms.
