Eco walk ‘Biodiversity in the city’

  • Visits

Can nature be one of the most important resources of a modern city? During the event ‘Biodiversity in the city. A walk with Professor Marcin Kadej’, participants will discover the crucial role that biological diversity plays in the functioning of urban environments and in building an economy that works in harmony with nature.

The educational walk will take place in the surroundings of Baranowice Palace in Żory and will be led by Professor Marcin Kadej, an expert specialising in biodiversity research. During the meeting, participants will learn about local flora and fauna and gain insight into the ecosystems characteristic of the Upper Odra region.

Throughout the walk, Professor Kadej will explain the importance of biodiversity for ecosystem stability, environmental quality and the well-being of residents. Participants will also learn what actions local governments and communities can take to protect endangered species, develop green spaces and support natural ecological processes within urban areas.

Particular attention will be given to how biodiversity can be integrated into urban planning and city development strategies. Green infrastructure, the protection of natural habitats and the creation of environmentally friendly public spaces are solutions that not only protect nature but also support the development of an economy based on the sustainable use of natural resources.

The walk will provide an opportunity for direct contact with nature and for discussion about how urban development can coexist with environmental protection. Participants will learn that investing in nature also means investing in the health of residents, the resilience of cities to climate change and a high quality of life.

The event is implemented as part of the project ‘Silesia. Blue Sky Restored’.

Speaker: Waldemar Szendera, PhD in Biological Sciences, Professor at GWSP.

Hosts: Joanna Szerzyńska-Grabowska, eco-manager of the Żory Municipality; and Beata Naguszewska, Head of Pałac Baranowice.
