The Elders of Arguedas: restoring the land, sharing the legacy

  • Conferences and summits

This event engages senior members of the local community of Arguedas (Navarra) in ecosystem restoration activities linked to the TUI Forest Navarra project. It highlights the important role that local knowledge and community participation can play in restoring and caring for natural landscapes.

In many rural villages in Spain, the landscape has historically been shaped by agriculture and livestock farming, and older generations maintain a strong connection with the land alongside valuable knowledge of traditional land management practices. Although these practices are less common today, this experience remains an important resource for understanding and caring for local ecosystems.

The initiative aims to create a meaningful link between elderly members of the community and ongoing environmental restoration efforts. Around 200-300 participants are expected to take part, including senior residents, local families, younger generations and project representatives. Through this intergenerational exchange, participants explore how traditional knowledge can contribute to modern nature restoration.

Participants engage in hands-on restoration activities while sharing experiences and knowledge about traditional land stewardship, and they also learn about the objectives of the TUI Forest Navarra restoration project and the importance of protecting and restoring ecosystems in the region.

The event combines practical restoration work, informal knowledge exchange and community dialogue, strengthening the connection between people and landscape while celebrating local heritage and encouraging long-term environmental stewardship.

As part of the EU Green Week 2026 programme, the initiative shows how local communities can actively contribute to ecosystem restoration while preserving cultural knowledge related to the land.
