Investing in resilient agriculture

  • Public debates

This partner event will explore how investing in nature can help protect the future of tiger nut farming in l’Horta de València, a unique agricultural landscape that is part of the region’s identity and daily life. Facing growing pressures linked to climate change, water stress and soil degradation, this traditional crop offers an important local example of why nature-positive solutions matter.

Through a two-hour evening session open to the wider public, the event will connect the future of tiger nut cultivation with broader questions about landscape, food, water, local economy and community well-being. The aim is to create an accessible and engaging conversation around the challenges affecting this emblematic crop and the opportunities to build greater resilience in l’Horta.

Using the case of tiger nut farming, the event will highlight how investing in healthy soils, better water management and more sustainable farming practices can bring benefits not only to farmers, but also to local communities, consumers and the wider territory. It will address current concerns in a clear and approachable way, while encouraging reflection on how local action can support both environmental protection and rural livelihoods.

The programme will include short introductory talks followed by an open roundtable discussion with local actors, giving space to different perspectives and encouraging participation from attendees. Rather than focusing only on technical aspects, the session will invite dialogue on how to preserve a living agricultural landscape that has cultural, environmental and economic value for the region.

The event is aimed at local residents, farmers, civil society organisations, students, public authorities and anyone interested in the future of l’Horta de València. It will contribute to the objectives of EU Green Week 2026 by showing how a locally rooted and community-oriented discussion can help promote a more resilient and nature-positive economy.
