From land use to land renewal: the mining sector’s role in nature restoration

  • Konference a summity

This webinar will showcase real-life examples of nature restoration carried out by the European mining sector, demonstrating how former mining sites can be transformed into safe, stable and environmentally valuable landscapes.

The event will feature two case studies. The first, ‘Restoration of the old Olympias arsenopyrite concentrate storage area of Kassandra mines’, highlights the rehabilitation of a former mining site in Greece. The second, ‘From waste to landscape: geomorphic restoration and transition planning at the Ilmenitas waste rock dumps’, presents approaches to reshaping mining waste areas into restored landscapes that can support nature and future land use.

Following the presentations, a panel discussion will bring together a range of perspectives, including representatives from the mining industry, an industry association, a policymaker, an academic and a civil society organisation. The discussion will explore key lessons learned, ongoing challenges and how restoration efforts can be further supported across Europe.

The webinar will conclude with an interactive Q&A session, giving participants the opportunity to engage directly with the speakers.

This event is designed for both policymakers and the wider public, offering an opportunity to better understand how the mining industry is contributing to nature restoration and environmental protection. Its objective is to highlight the actions taken by the mining sector, encourage open dialogue and increase awareness of how restored mining sites can deliver long-term benefits for communities and ecosystems.
