Description
The European drought observatory (EDO) provides drought relevant information such as maps of indicators derived from different IoT data sources (e.g., precipitation measurements, satellite measurements, modelled soil moisture content). According to the latest map of the Combined Drought Indicator, 16.1% of the EU 27 territory is in Warning conditions and 1.2% is in Alert conditions.
Heavy droughts and dicreasing precipitation rates is leading Europe, and especially Spain, towards very high water stress rates. Therefore, at a local level, the 2024 main goal is to achieve a 10% reduction in water consumption. In this sense, Las Rozas is working in digitalization, real time monitoring systems, and Automatic Hydrological Information Systems implementation as a way to achieve such goal. As a matter of fact, an intelligent irrigation remote management system that wirelessly connects the sensorization and action elements has been deployed in 1.010.298,16 m2 of public parks and gardens.
In addition, it incorporates flow controllers and data from weather stations to manage irrigation times based on real daily conditions. Moreover, by promoting blue education in schools and engaging citizens, the municipality will face the risks climate change is arising in the last years. This is why Las Rozas has organized an annual collaborative project with the participation of the municipality's schools: “Las Rozas Blue Challenge”.
The eco-schools program is promoted by the Foundation for Environmental Education and developed in Spain by ADEAC. During the 2023/2024 academic year, a total of 29 schools (public, private and subsidized) have been part of Las Rozas Eco-Schools Network, which is the largest local network in Spain. Students carry out several activities and actions, such as a research on the sustainable water management as an essential natural resource. They develop ideas and proposals that help improve comprehensive and sustainable water management through eco-innovation and digital technologies.
During the EGW, the municipality environmental department, represented by its Councillor and technical experts, will show the innovative and technological use cases implemented in the city, whereas students will present their initiatives. The best student project will be rewarded with Las Rozas Sustainable badge. The event will take place in one of the most relevant water spots of the city: the pier of the historic Guadarrama Channel.
