Description

At :metabolon, we explore the challenges and opportunities of the circular economy through a cross-sectoral and holistic lens. Our partner event for EU Green Week 2025 highlights how ecological, economic, technological, administrative and societal perspectives intertwine to shape sustainable futures – a concept we call the 'fivefold helix.'
Our online session focuses on practical approaches to circularity in regional contexts, showcasing how research, education and civic engagement come together to tackle residual materials, resource efficiency and zero-waste lifestyles. We aim to provide a dynamic overview of how circular economy principles are implemented at :metabolon and inspire exchange on local and European best practices.
The event is open to stakeholders from public administration, education, research, industry and civil society – particularly those working on or interested in circular economy, waste prevention, sustainability education and regional transformation strategies.
The 2-hour online event begins with a virtual tour of our site near Cologne, guided by an introduction to our permanent exhibition 'Linear becomes circular'. We will present collaborative research projects in partnership with the Technical University of Cologne, supported by videos and audio clips that bring our innovation landscape to life. We will also introduce our knowledge transfer formats, including hands-on learning spaces, municipal zero waste campaigns and educational initiatives for all age groups.
In the second part, we invite participants to engage in interactive discussions on circularity in practice – from consumer-oriented solutions to ideal product cycles and sustainable building materials. Using tangible examples and illustrative objects, we will explore common sector-specific hurdles and the support needed to overcome them – with a special focus on aligning regional initiatives with European frameworks and goals.
The session features experts from :metabolon, researchers from TH Köln, and municipal leaders driving circular change on the ground. Join us to experience how theory becomes practice – and circularity becomes reality.
