From national restoration plans to greener cities - Webinar

  • Conferences and summits

The EU Nature Restoration Law (NRL) introduces binding targets to restore degraded ecosystems across the EU, including specific provisions for urban ecosystems. Member States are required to submit their National Restoration Plans (NRPs) by mid‑2026, outlining how they will deliver on these targets.

While NRPs are being prepared primarily at national level, cities will play a critical role in implementation, particularly regarding:

  • the no net loss of urban green space and tree canopy up to 2030;
  • the progressive increase of urban green areas and tree cover after 2030; and
  • the deployment of nature‑based solutions for climate adaptation, flood prevention and urban liveability.

The European Urban Initiative (EUI) is an instrument of the European Commission supporting urban areas on sustainable urban development. It is, therefore, focused on urban administrations, stakeholders and policymakers.

The webinar organized by the EUI will be focusing on implementation readiness: how cities can prepare organizationally, technically and politically to deliver NRL objectives once NRPs enter into force. This webinar will encourage a discussion around understanding NRL obligations for cities, and identifying the skills, knowledge and tools that cities will need to implement these requirements. The conclusions and needs identified will be further tackled in an in-person event organized in the second half of 2026.
