As part of EU Green Week, this seminar brings together policymakers, industry leaders, researchers and civil society to explore how sustainable energy and investing in nature can reinforce one another in Europe's transition towards a climate-neutral, resilient and competitive economy.
Portugal offers a compelling case study in what an accelerated clean energy transition can look like. With one of the highest shares of renewable electricity in Europe, the country has demonstrated that ambitious targets, sustained infrastructure investment and a strong natural resource base can combine to produce real results. At the same time, Portugal's experience highlights an important tension: expanding energy infrastructure — from wind and solar farms to grids and data centres — must be managed in ways that protect and restore the natural ecosystems on which long-term resilience depends. Energy transition and nature are not competing priorities; done well, they are mutually reinforcing investments.
The seminar will examine how policy frameworks, green finance mechanisms and technological innovation can accelerate the deployment of clean energy solutions while embedding nature-positive principles across the value chain. Discussions will address grid modernisation and storage, the land-use implications of renewable energy expansion, the role of the bioeconomy in diversifying clean energy sources, and how Portugal's experience can inform broader European strategy under the Green Deal.
By connecting clean energy ambition with the imperative to invest in nature, the event contributes to a vision of sustainable growth in which environmental restoration and economic competitiveness go hand in hand.
