Description

This interactive workshop, held as part of EU Green Week 2025, will showcase how European online second-hand marketplaces are playing a key role in promoting the EU’s circular economy practices. The event is designed for a diverse audience, including the general public, sustainability influencers and policymakers. The primary objective of this session is to demonstrate how online second-hand marketplaces empower individuals and businesses to engage in circular economy practices by offering convenient, sustainable options for buying, selling and reusing products.
Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the practical benefits of second-hand trade and how these platforms are driving positive change in terms of waste reduction, resource efficiency and sustainability. The workshop will be led by members of Classifieds Marketplaces Europe (Adevinta, OLX Group, Schibsted, Vinted, CustoJusto and Wallapop), a coalition of online classifieds platforms operating in 21 European countries.
Circular consumption and extending the lifespan of products is a core value of these platforms. By giving previously owned goods a new purpose, they help to extend the lifecycle of products and enable consumers to make a positive impact.
The workshop will feature:
Presentation of online marketplaces
Participants will learn how second-hand platforms work, with a step-by-step guide on how to use the applications, highlighting the ease and convenience they provide for individuals looking to make more sustainable purchasing choices.
Case studies from CME members
Key platforms from the CME coalition will present real-world examples of how they are facilitating second-hand trade across various industries, demonstrating the versatility of these marketplaces in offering a wide range of products and services, from clothing to electronics, furniture and beyond.
Live demonstrations
Attendees will have the chance to interact with the platforms directly, testing the applications and gaining practical knowledge on how they can participate in second-hand trade.
Interactive discussions
A discussion round will focus on what policies or incentives could further support the growth and development of the second-hand market within the EU.
The key outcome of the workshop is to enhance public understanding of the convenience and benefits of second-hand trade. By highlighting real-world examples and engaging with participants through discussions and demonstrations, the workshop aims to inspire greater public engagement in the reuse and circular consumption of goods.
