Workshop: From coal to the sun - students discover the energy of the future

During the workshop 'From coal to the sun: students discover the energy of the future', students will set off on an educational journey through the world of energy, technology and the modern economy. The meeting will show that economic development does not have to mean environmental degradation. On the contrary, it is increasingly based on solutions inspired by nature and on deliberate investment in cleaner, nature-compatible alternatives.

In the first part of the event, students will learn about the history of energy transformations and find out how the way energy is produced is changing in many countries around the world. Through examples from different regions of Europe, participants will see how the development of renewable energy sources influences the economy, the labour market and the quality of life of residents — illustrating how the shift away from fossil fuels is itself a form of investment in nature, with tangible benefits for ecosystems, biodiversity and human wellbeing.

During the meeting, students will also learn why improving air quality is one of the most important challenges for modern cities. They will understand that decisions concerning energy have a direct impact on people's health and on the condition of the natural environment, and that choosing cleaner energy systems is one of the most effective ways to reduce pressure on nature at the local level.

A special element of the workshop will be a discussion about new professions related to the green transition. Students will learn about examples of professions connected with renewable energy sources, the design of ecological technologies and environmental management — helping them see themselves as future actors in a nature-positive economy.

The second part of the event will take the form of the educational game 'Clean energy'. During the game, students will plan the energy development of the city of the future, making decisions about investments in different energy technologies. The game will show that economic development requires a balance between the needs of society and environmental protection, and that investing in nature-friendly energy systems generates lasting returns for both people and the planet.

The workshops emphasise that the future of the economy depends on informed decisions and the knowledge of future generations. Environmental education is one of the most important elements in building sustainable development and in equipping young people to become informed advocates and practitioners of investment in nature.
