Director General at the Luxembourg Ministry of Environment, Climate and Biodiversity

André WEIDENHAUPT

Since March 2014, André Weidenhaupt has been Director General at the Luxembourg Ministry of Environment, Climate and Biodiversity. He in charge of various environmental issues related to the human environment (climate change, sustainable development, circular economy, clean air, water protection, waste management, noise, chemicals, and industrial pollution prevention), as well as European and international environmental issues and the budget.

André Weidenhaupt has been Chair of the Management Board of the European Environment Agency (EEA) since September 2023. Previously, he was Vice-Chair and Member of the Bureau from 2017 to 2023. From September 2019 to December 2023, he was a member of the Bureau of the Environmental Policy Committee (EPOC) of the OECD. From September 2005 to March 2014, André Weidenhaupt was Director of the Luxembourg Water Management Agency (Administration de la gestion de l’eau).

In this capacity, he chaired the International Commission for the Protection of the Rhine from 2011 to 2013. In 2004 and 2005, he was REACH coordinator at the Permanent Representation of Luxembourg to the EU in Brussels and chaired the Council's Ad Hoc Working Party on chemicals.

André Weidenhaupt studied chemistry at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich before obtaining a postgraduate diploma in sanitary engineering and water pollution control and a PhD in natural sciences from the ETH.
