Under the theme ‘Investing in a Nature-Positive Economy’, this conference brings together academics, policymakers, local government leaders and sustainability practitioners to explore how cities can become key drivers of environmentally responsible and economically viable transformation. The event focuses on the role of circular economy principles and urban resilience as essential pillars for building a nature-positive future, highlighting how targeted investments in sustainable urban systems can generate long-term social, economic and environmental benefits.
The conference opens with an introductory session featuring Mariusz Sokołowicz, professor at the University of Łódź and dean of the Faculty of Economics and Sociology, alongside Małgorzata Grodzicka-Kowalczyk from the European Institute for Supporting Development and Maciej Kowalczyk representing PHENO HORIZON.
The core of the event is a panel session combining expert presentations and a high-level discussion. Małgorzata Grodzicka-Kowalczyk introduces the principles of the circular economy, the concept and objectives of urban laboratories and the growing importance of resilience in city planning. Tomasz Łuczkowski, former deputy mayor of Opoczno and current councillor, presents the practical functioning and positive impact of the urban circular economy laboratory implemented in Opoczno, offering a concrete example of local innovation in action. Mariusz Siewiera, mayor of Łowicz, provides insight into the real challenges cities face in advancing circularity and resilience, grounding the discussion in current municipal realities.
These perspectives feed into a dynamic discussion panel moderated by Maciej Kowalczyk, with participation from city leaders alongside a representative of the Institute of Environmental Protection – National Research Institute. Together, they examine the barriers Polish cities encounter in strengthening resilience and explore how circular, innovative solutions can be adapted and scaled across different urban contexts.
Designed for local and regional authorities, urban planners, researchers, environmental organisations and business representatives interested in circular economy solutions, the conference aims to foster dialogue, share practical knowledge and support collaboration across sectors.
