This event will present the critical yet often invisible role that rangers play in protecting Europe’s natural heritage and delivering environmental policies on the ground.
Rangers operate at the frontline of biodiversity conservation, climate adaptation, ecosystem restoration and environmental law enforcement. Through their daily work, they translate European strategies into tangible actions, ensuring that key policies such as the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 and the European Green Deal are effectively implemented across diverse territorial contexts.
Despite this central role, the contribution of rangers remains largely under-recognised in policy, funding and public discourse. This session aims to address that gap by making visible the operational, social and environmental value generated by rangers across Europe.
The event follows a presentation-based format, combining short interventions with concrete case examples from different countries. These illustrate how rangers contribute to wildlife protection, anti-poaching efforts, habitat restoration, environmental education and community engagement, providing a practical perspective on policy implementation.
In addition, the session highlights key challenges affecting the profession, including capacity gaps, training needs and resource constraints, offering a grounded view of current limitations and opportunities.
By connecting policy with practice through real-world examples, this session aims to improve understanding of how environmental objectives are implemented in reality, and why strengthening and investing in the ranger workforce is essential for effective, resilient and territorially adapted environmental governance across Europe.
