Integrated series of events in Vršac connects ecology, education, culture and recreation. The primary goal is to demonstrate concrete ways in which resources, such as time, knowledge, skills and space, can be invested in the protection and restoration of nature, directly contributing to the well-being and resilience of the local community in line with the EU Green Week 2026 agenda.
The programme is divided into four key segments:
- Investing in biodiversity (30 May): ‘3rd Gravelijada’ - Nature ride. This activity leads participants through the Vršac Mountains and the Mali Vršački Rit, areas designated as an IBA (Important Bird Area) by BirdLife International. The aim is to promote the protection of these habitats as crucial natural capital. By using their own energy (pedalling), participants invest in preserving resources that form the foundation of ecotourism and sustainable regional development.
- Community and resource circles (31 May): ‘3rd Gravelijada’ - Nature walk and networking. This segment focuses on social capital. Through hiking in the Vršac Mountains, a communal lunch and networking, we promote the goals of the Green Week. The emphasis is on the exchange of knowledge and skills as essential resources for better environmental management.
- Investing in knowledge and innovation (3 June): World Bicycle Day. Hosted at the ‘Meeting Point’ association, we are organising a discussion on modern transport solutions with a focus on e-mobility. By presenting a book and/or blog on urban transport, we invest in citizen education regarding rational space utilisation and carbon footprint reduction, key elements for a competitive and green urban future.
- The Green Week Circle (7 June): Urban cycling and lake promotion. The project’s grand finale is a bicycle ride through the streets of Vršac, connecting the city’s green spaces and concluding at the City Lake. This event symbolises ‘closing the circle’ - returning to nature through a conscious change of habits. A final promotion of Green Week goals will be held at the lake, highlighting that investing in nature is an investment that directly improves the quality of life for all citizens.
Through these activities, Vršac serves as an example of how local identity and natural resources can be leveraged to build a nature-positive economy, ensuring community prosperity and environmental sustainability.
All events are free of charge; however, prior registration is required for logistical reasons.
