Driving the blue economy: the role of microalgae in sustainable innovation

  • Conferences and summits

This webinar, organised in the framework of EU Green Week 2026, will explore the role of microalgae in advancing the blue economy and driving sustainable innovation across Europe.

The event will focus on the SMACC+ project, which promotes the development and application of bioactive compounds derived from microalgae, contributing to more sustainable solutions in sectors such as cosmetics, health and biotechnology. By leveraging marine resources in a responsible and efficient way, SMACC+ supports the transition towards a circular and climate neutral economy.

The main objective of the webinar is to showcase how microalgae based technologies can contribute to resource efficiency, reduce environmental impact and create new business opportunities. The session will also address key challenges related to scalability, regulatory frameworks and market uptake, while highlighting the importance of cross sector collaboration.

The webinar is addressed to a broad audience, including researchers, SMEs, industry representatives, policymakers and stakeholders interested in blue biotechnology and sustainable innovation.

The format will include a series of short presentations delivered by project partners, covering topics such as microalgae cultivation, bioprocessing and the development of bioactive applications. The session will also present strategies for knowledge transfer, stakeholder engagement and the replication of project results across different European regions.

Participants will gain practical insights into the journey from research to market, as well as the potential of microalgae to support sustainable growth and innovation. The event will conclude with an interactive Q&A session, offering attendees the opportunity to engage directly with experts and explore future collaboration opportunities.
